🔁 Net Metering in Ontario

Turn Solar Power into Bill Credits

With net metering, you generate electricity with your solar system and use it in real time.
When you generate more power than you use, the surplus is sent back to the grid — and you get energy credits on your next hydro bill.

📊 Example:

You use 900 kWh, and produce 1,100 kWh
→ You receive a 200 kWh credit for your next billing period.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduce your electric bills year-round

  • Carry forward unused credits for up to 12 months

  • Pay delivery fees only on electricity you pull from the grid

  • Improve energy independence and home value

⚠️ Net metering is first-come, first-served and subject to local grid capacity.
We handle all utility paperwork and approvals for you.

 Step-by-Step: How It All Works

1. Pre-Retrofit Energy Audit

Book an appointment with a certified energy advisor. You’ll get a report outlining recommended upgrades — including solar — eligible for loan financing.

2. Gather Quotes

Get 1–3 contractor quotes showing itemized costs and any deposits. You can include only upgrades that are recommended in the audit.

3. Apply for the Loan

Submit your application via the official portal, including ID, income verification, utility bills, tax documents, and contractor quotes.

4. Start Your Solar Installation

Once the loan is approved, you can begin work.
Note: Up to 15% of the loan may be advanced upfront to cover deposits.

5. Post-Retrofit Inspection

After completion, your advisor will return to verify the upgrade. This is needed to release the rest of your loan.

6. Receive Final Loan Amount

The loan funds are deposited to your account — minus any upfront advance. You then repay monthly over 10 years.

🧠 FAQs

Will I still get a hydro bill?
Yes, but it will be lower. You'll pay only for the net energy you consume and possibly small delivery fees.

Will my monitoring app match my bill?
Not exactly. Your utility only sees the energy exported, not what your home uses instantly from solar.

Is the loan taxable?
No — as long as you only receive energy credits, not cash payments.
